On behalf of our client, the Port of San Francisco, we organized a celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27.
This environmentally friendly terminal has welcomed millions of passengers, bolstered the city’s economy, and created numerous union jobs. BCOMM managed the production of the event to honor the terminal’s significant positive impact on both the environment and the local economy over the past decade.
The only cruise ship terminal in the world named after a labor leader….
James R. Herman - A Leader for Workers and Equality
James R. Herman was a prominent labor leader and civil rights advocate who served as President of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). Known for his dedication to workers' rights, he championed fair labor practices and racial equality. His influence extended beyond the docks, as he also served as a San Francisco Port Commissioner. The terminal at the Port of San Francisco was named after him in recognition of his lasting contributions to the labor movement and his efforts to improve working conditions and opportunities for all.

Curating a Seamless Event Experience
BCOMM brought on some of the SF/Bay Area’s best vendors to make the celebration special. The event featured a delicious breakfast menu curated by Chef Tucker, stunning fall-themed floral arrangements by Saint Flora, and seamless production support from our trusted partners at BRIGHT and San Jose/San Francisco AV Rentals.

Designing Collateral for a Memorable Terminal Celebration
We designed the invitations and event program for the celebration, capturing the terminal’s beautiful prominence along the San Francisco waterfront, and the vibrant energy of the community that surrounds it.

Showcasing the Terminal’s Iconic Journey
We collaborated with the Port to design a series of easel displays that presented the project’s transformation from concept to completion. Using a combination of historic images, architectural renderings, and progress photos, the displays offered a visual timeline of the terminal's development, illustrating both the iconic design process and the terminal’s significance to the San Francisco waterfront.
This visual narrative invited guests to engage with the story behind Pier 27, highlighting its past, present, and future as a vibrant community landmark.
From the Whitehouse to the Waterfront
The Terminal Celebration brought together an inspiring group of leaders who paid tribute to the legacy of James R. Herman with heartfelt stories and reflections on his transformative impact on the San Francisco waterfront. Distinguished guests included Speaker Emerita and Representative for California’s 11th Congressional District, Nancy Pelosi; Aaron Peskin, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; David Chiu, San Francisco City Attorney; Elaine Forbes, Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco; Kim Brandon, President of the Port of San Francisco Commission; Willie Adams, Member of the Port of San Francisco Commission; and Anna Marie Presutti, CEO of SF Travel, who honored Herman’s vision, commitment to labor rights, and dedication to the community.
The terminal stands as a testament to our city's ongoing dedication to progress and community connection, capturing the spirit of all who walk through its doors.
